11. 집에 가족들만의 도서관을 만들어 자녀들이 자신들이 좋아하는 책들을 계속해서 즐길 수 있도록 해 보자. 책들을 사면 책에 비닐 커버를 씌워 오랫동안 책을 깨끗하게 사용할 수 있도록 해 보자. 중고 서점이나 근처 도서관에서 중고 서적들을 파는지 찾아 본다. 자녀들이 친구들이나 이웃들과 책을 바꿔 읽어 보는 것을 장려한다. 명절에 책을 선물하는 것을 집안의 전통으로 세워보자.

Start a family library so that your child’s favorite books can be enjoyed again and again. Buy paperback books and cover them with clear, self-sticking plastic to help them to last. Look for used book stores and used book sales at your local library. Encourage your children to swap books with friends and neighbours. Establish a family tradition of giving books for holidays.

12. 자녀들의 학교에서 “책 교환”을 계획해 보자. 이곳에 입장을 하기 위해 아이들은 2~3권의 중고책들을 가지고 와서 제출하면 책 한 권당 티켓 한 장씩을 받게 된다. 아이들은 자신들이 가지고 있는 티켓과 다른 친구들이 가져온 책들을 교환하게 된다. 이 방법을 통해 아이들은 서로 가져온 책들을 교환해 새로운 책들을 즐길 수 있게 된다.

Plan a “Book swap” at your child’s school. Admission is two or three used books. Give children a ticket for each book they turn in an allow them to exchange tickets for books other children have brought. This way, children can pass on the books they have brought and enjoy some new books at the same time.

13. 어떤 책이 당신 자녀의 독서 수준에 맞는지 알 수 있는가? 이때는 “rule of thumb (엄지의 법칙)” 을 이용해 보자. 자녀에게 혼자서 책의 한 페이지를 읽게 해 본다. 책을 읽을 때 주먹을 쥐고 있다가 만약 모르는 단어가 나오면 손가락을 하나씩 펴도록 한다. 만약 페이지를 다 읽기 전에 손가락 5개를 모두 편다면 이 책은 자녀가 혼자 읽기는 어려운 수준으로 보면 된다.

How can you tell whether a book is at your child’s reading level? Use the “rule of thumb”. Have your child read a page of the book aloud. Have her hold up one finger for each word she does not know. If she holds up 4 fingers and a thumb before the end of the page, the book is probably to hard for her to read alone.

14. 자녀의 나이가 아주 어리다면 집안 전체를 읽기 학습장으로 바꿀 수 있다. 마스킹 테이프를 이용해 당신의 자녀가 보고 이용하는 모든 문, 벽, 소파, 침대, 스위치 등에 이름표를 부쳐 자녀가 단어를 익히게 하도록 한다.

For a very early reader, you can turn your whole house into a read-ing lesson. Make masking tape labels for everything your child sees or uses: door, wall, sofa, bed, light switch.

15. 자녀의 TV 시청 시간을 제한 하도록 한다. 자녀들에게 30분 동안 TV를 시청할 수 있는 티켓을 주고 자녀가 TV 시청을 원하면 티켓을 반납하도록 한다. 만약 자녀가 티켓을 모두 사용했다면 그 주는 더 이상 TV를 시청하지 못하게 한다. 가능하다면 아이들이 사용하지 않은 티켓을 책을 사기 위한 돈으로 바꾸어 주도록 한다.

Limit the amount of TV your child watches. Give your children “TV Tickets” each good for 30 minutes of television time. When the tickets are gone, the set is turned off for the week. If possible, allow children to redeem unused tickets for money to buy books.

16. 자녀와 함께 빵을 굽거나 요리를 해 보자. 조리 법을 읽고 순서에 따라 준비해 나가는 것은 자녀들이 읽고 지침을 따라가는 연습을 하는데 최적의 방법이다. 자녀가 즐길 수 있는 간단한 조리법을 준비하고 자녀가 순서들을 하나씩 큰 소리로 읽도록 한다.

Bake or cook together. Reading and preparing a recipe together is an excellent way to give your child practice in reading and following directions. Choose a simple recipe-one your child enjoys. Have him read the directions out loud, step by step.

17. 재미있는 읽기 놀이로 “scavenger hunt (필요한 것을 찾는 사냥)”을 시도해 보자. 집안 곳곳에 단서들을 적어 놓고 자녀들이 이곳 저곳으로 다니며 단서들을 통해 원하는 것을 찾거나 해결하도록 해 보자.

Try a scavenger hunt as a fun reading activity. Write clues that send your child from one part of the house to another.

18. 자녀들에게 신문에서 찾을 목록을 주어 Scavenger hunt 놀이를 즐기게 해 보자. 예를 들어 유명한 운동선수의 사진, 우리 도시의 어제 기온, 자녀가 제일 좋아하는 TV프로그램의 방송 시작 시간, 동네 극장에서 상영하는 영화나 좋아하는 만화의 제목 같은 것들을 자녀 스스로 찾아 보도록 해 본다. 자녀들에게 찾을 목록, 가위, 풀과 신문을 줘 보자.

Try a scavenger hunt through the newspaper by giving your child a list of things to find, e.g., a picture of a famous athlete, the temperature in your town yesterday, the time her favorite TV program begins, the title of a movie at a local theatre, a favorite cartoon. Give your child the list, scissors, glue and your newspaper.

19. 자녀들의 질문에 대해 당신이 답을 모른다면 자녀가 직접 그 답을 찾아 보도록 도와준다. 동네 도서관에 데리고 가는 것이 그 답을 찾을 수 있고 또한 앞으로 많은 질문들에 대해 답을 구할 수 있는 방법을 배우는데 도움이 될 것이다.

When your child asks a question, and you don’t know the answer, help him look it up. A trip to your local library will help your child find the answer to his question and to learn how to find answers to many questions in the future.

20. 자녀들이 그들이 좋아하는 책의 저자들에게 편지를 쓰도록 장려한다.

Encourage your child to write a letter to their favorite author.
