 MOSAIC Newcomers’ Centre for Children and Families (NCCF)

POSITION:

Multicultural Cook

DEPARTMENT:

Family and Settlement Services

POSITION FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Programs Coordinator, the Multicultural Cook supports the Newcomers’ Centre for Children and Families programs, staff and refugee families by providing culturally appropriate meals and daily kitchen maintenance services. The Multicultural Cook assists in creating a welcoming, environment, by adhering to and maintaining safety standards, order, cleanliness and sanitary conditions, in the kitchen and throughout the Newcomers’ Centre for Children and Families. The Multicultural Cook works in cooperation with program staff and community partners to support the families accessing the program. S/he demonstrates a strong understanding towards cultural sensitivity and settlement challenges.

MINIMUM

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge in how to plan and prepare menus using the Canadian Food Guide, which are culturally diverse, and promote optimal health and nutrition.

• Knowledge of and experience with issues facing refugees; some knowledge and understanding of early child development issues and relevant community resources.

• Public post-secondary Cook Qualification or certificate, diploma or degree.

• Certificates in current First Aid and Food Safety.

• Skilled in operating standard kitchen appliances and equipment.

• Demonstrated skills in how to complete assigned tasks and to contribute effectively as a team player.

• Strong interpersonal skills for dealing effectively with a diverse public which includes a multicultural clientele and staff of other community agencies.

• 1-2 years in cook/custodian and customer service field.

• Experience working with immigrants and refugee children and families

• At least one year of working experience in a client-oriented position, or related field, assisting immigrants and refugees.

• Must have access to a vehicle.

• Ability to lift up to 50lbs.

• Highly organized, versatile, friendly, flexible and innovative, able to work independently, with a team and with multiple partners.

DESIRABLE SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

• An Apprenticeship Qualification (e.g. Red Seal, Interprovincial Endorsement, Cook Certificate of Endorsement, etc) is an asset.

• Experience and enjoy working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

• Fluency in a second language

• Good organization and planning skills

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

HOURS:

32 Hours/week, Monday to Friday

STARTING PAY

(LEVEL 1)

TERM

$15.91 / Hour

Contract will end on March 31, 2017
