축구에서 수비수 반칙(defender’s foul)으로 주어지는 ‘페널티킥’은 말 그대로(as the word itself) ‘penalty kick’이라 하고, 연장전 전·후반 후 승부를 가리기(divide victory or defeat) 위한 ‘승부차기’는 ‘penalty shootout’이라고 한다.
축구 골대는 가로 7.3m 세로 2.4m, 면적은 17.9㎡다. 웬만한 화물 컨테이너보다 크다. 골키퍼의 키와 체격(stature and build)이 제아무리 커도 골문 전체를 막지는 못한다. 공과 골키퍼 거리는 11m, 공이 골 라인을 넘는 데 걸리는 시간은 0.4초, 골키퍼가 몸을 날리는 시간은 0.6초쯤 된다. 산술적 득점률은 최소한 80% 이상이다.
그런데 세계 최정상 선수들이 경합하는(compete with each other) 월드컵에서조차 어처구니없는 실축(ridiculous miss)이 속출한다. 어떤 연유일까. 과학자들이 선수들의 뇌(腦)를 분석한 결과, 페널티킥을 차기(take a penalty kick) 전에 실축할 경우의 결과를 성급히 과도하게 염려하기(hastily overworry the consequences of missing the shot) 때문인 것으로 조사됐다.
이런 섣부른 생각(half-baked idea)은 뇌의 전전두피질을 작동시켜(activate the pre-frontal cortex in their brain) 잡다한 반응을 일으키면서 긴장과 불안감으로 이어진다(lead to nerves and apprehension). 무의식적으로 뇌의 이 부분을 촉발한(unconsciously trigger this region of the brain) 선수는 잘못될 경우에 겪게 될 잠재적 결과들을 곱씹다가(dwell on the potential ramifications) 본인이 시도하려 했던 것을 그르치기 십상이다(be likely to fluff their attempt). 순간적으로 숨이 턱 막혀 평소 실력을 망가뜨리면서(inhibit their usual performance) 어이없는 실수를 저지르게(make an egregious mistake) 된다.
어떻게든 공을 골망 안으로 차 넣기만(thrash the ball into the net) 하면 된다. 말은 쉽지만 실제 그렇게 하기는 쉽지 않다(be easier said than done). 다른 선수들과 함께 뛰다가 갑자기 엄청난 개인적 책임과 심리적 압박(enormous personal responsibility and psychological pressure)이 단 한 선수에게 떠넘겨진다(fall on the shoulders of one player).
그 순간, 불안감을 느낀(feel anxious) 뇌의 전전두피질은 급작스레 달뜨면서(suddenly grow restless) 선수의 판단을 돕기는커녕 오히려 순간적 혼란에 빠뜨린다(instantaneously throw them into confusion). 골대 크로스바 밑 50㎝, 어느 쪽이든 양쪽 골 포스트 50㎝ 안쪽으로 차기만 하면 어떤 골키퍼도 속수무책(be at a loss what to do)이라는 ‘완벽한 페널티 킥을 위한 축구 공식’(a footie formula for perfect pen)을 떠올리며 찬 공이 허공을 난다.
