여객기 승무원(flight attendant)을 땅과 하늘을 잇는 교량, 하늘의 외교관(diplomat)이자 수호천사(guardian angel)라고 부른다. 제주발 대구행 아시아나 승무원들이 느닷없이(out of the blue) 비상문을 열어 제친 난동 승객(riotous passenger) 때문에 곤욕을 치렀다.
승무원들은 탑승구에서 천사 같은 상냥한 미소(tender smile)와 외교관 같은 영혼 없는 인사(soulless greeting)로 승객들을 맞이한다. 그런데 그 짧은 만남 사이에(in the brief encounter) 순간적인 관찰을 한다고(make fleeting observations) 한다. 소개팅 상대 만날 때처럼 한눈에 쭉 훑는다(scan them all at once). 다른 의도가 아니라 모두에게 안전하고 편안한 비행(safe and comfortable flight)을 위해서다.
신발과 복장부터 살핀다. 비상시 탈출 때 불편한 하이힐(high heels)이나 슬리퍼(flip-flops) 착용, 업무 출장(business trip) 또는 휴가 여행(vacation tour) 옷차림 여부를 파악한다. 이어 얼굴 표정을 본다(look at their facial expressions). 미소 지으며 눈을 맞추는(make eye contact) 승객과 달리 미간을 찡그리고 눈길을 돌리는(frown and look away) 이는 쌀쌀맞고 비협조적인 요주의 인물(unfriendly and uncooperative person of the blacklist)로 점찍는다.
몸짓 언어도 관찰한다. 느긋하고 침착한 몸가짐(relaxed and composed demeanor)인지, 아니면 계속 꼼지락대거나 산만하게 주위를 둘러보는(fidget or look around distractedly) 등 초조하거나 마음이 불편한 기색을 나타내는지(display signs of nervousness or discomfort) 주목한다.
술을 거나하게 걸친(have a few too many) 것도 금세 알아챈다(pick up on it). 만취해서 고주망태가 된(get dead drunk and wasted) 승객을 탐지해 이륙 전에 내리도록 조치할(get them off the flight before takeoff) 것인지 여부도 이때 결정한다.
체격이 건장하고(have a strong physique) 몸 상태가 좋은(be in good shape) 승객은 눈여겨본다(keep an eye on them). 다른 이유에서가 아니다. 긴급 상황 때 도움을 줄 만한(lend a hand in the event of an emergency) 사람을 마음에 새겨두는(make a mental note of them) 것이다. 좌석 번호도 알아둔다.
대구공항 상공 213m 높이에서 비상문을 열어(open the emergency exit door) 승객들을 공포의 도가니에 몰아넣었던(drive them into a frenzy of fear) 30대 남성은 키 180㎝ 몸무게 100㎏의 거구(big build)였다. 그의 목덜미를 낚아채(snatch him by the scruff of his neck) 승무원들과 함께 제압하는 데 결정적 기여를 한(make a decisive contribution to the crew subduing him) ‘빨간 바지 승객’은 마침 국민재난안전총연합회 제주본부 상임부회장이었다.
